About Senegal

SENEGAL
Senegal is the western-most part of Africa in the Sub-Saharan area. It is bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, up north by Mauritania, on the East by Mali and down south by Guinea Conakry and Guinea Bissau. The country is named after the Senegal River taking its source from the Fouta Djalon mountains and rolling down to the embouchure in the northern town of Saint Louis.

The country is marked by tradition and modernity. The traditional, sober and functional architecture uses local materials (stones, sand, wood, straw), and the colonial period has left its marks on the country, basically in Goree Island or Saint Louis, which are actually classified sites on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

However, many modern works, illustrative of the country's march towards modernity, have been realized basically in the capital of Dakar.
